Almost a year after moving here, we have taken the next step towards making this house feel like home: building a chicken coop!
We’ve still got many improvements to make on it, namely a real door, a roost, and in time some nesting boxes, but overall I think it really shows my husband’s carpentry skills.
And the really cool part? We’ve used almost entirely scrap wood, and about the only thing we had to buy was the wire netting.
Some of the chicks enjoying their new abode. They were SO ready to move outside from the brooder.
Ah, so nice to have things started again isn’t it?

Yes, it most definitely is!

Very, very nice. It looks as if it is sitting on concrete or plywood? Will you be moving it onto the grass?

Yes, Dani, it is sitting atop concrete and we prefer it this way because of burrowing predators (particularly mongoose). I can easily clean the concrete from time to time by pressure washing with the garden hose, and I can also add some bedding (I’m thinking the bags of dry leaves the local maintenance workers gather every few days).

We have to worry about foxes, but a borrowing mongoose never entered my mind. I learn something new every day!

It all depends on the area – in our old house, foxes were the main predator. Here the mongoose is much more common.
